Multiple Fibres: Beyond the diffusion tensor

چکیده

This chapter covers techniques for resolving multiple fibre populations in each voxel, as well as methods to exploit the information they recover. It begins by describing the limitations of DTI and the problems that complex white-matter configurations such as crossing fibre-populations and bending fibres present. It then goes on to describe multiple-tensor models, diffusion spectrum imaging, QBall, spherical deconvolution and persistent angular structure (PAS) MRI, along with a summary of pros and cons of each method. The next section covers useful information that can be extracted from the output of the techniques presented, such as estimates of fibre-orientations and indices of anisotropy and complexity. Finally, tractography methods for exploiting the multiple-fibre reconstruction algorithms and their metrics are briefly discussed.

Mathematics of Crossing Fibres

This chapter looks at the problem of crossing fibres in diffusion MRI of the brain. Diffusion tensor imaging only gives us a single fibre direction, but fibres within single image voxels can adopt complex configurations. In particular, fibre crossings cause problems in diffusion tensor imaging that can result in failure of tractography or misleading indices of tissue integrity. Here we will stu...

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging tractography in cognitive disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW The advent of novel techniques for tracing connections in vivo, such as diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging tractography, allows us, for the first time in the human brain, to study the microstructural integrity of white matter fibres and perform virtual dissections of large scale neurocognitive networks. This review will outline the advantages and limitations of applyi...

Quantitative Analysis and Comparison of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Tractography Algorithms

This paper describes a platform developed for analysis of Diffusion Tensor Image data using different tractography algorithms. The platform allows these algorithms to be compared both quantitatively and qualitatively. Two specific tractography algorithms were compared, STT (Streamlines Tracking Technique) and TEND (tensor-deflection algorithm). The platform was assessed on a publicly available ...

Diffusion tensor imaging demonstrates deviation of fibres in normal appearing white matter adjacent to a brain tumour.

The objective was to study fibre orientation in the cerebral white matter of a patient with a brain tumour using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). A patient with a mild left hemiparesis and a tumour in the right frontal lobe and 20 healthy volunteers were scanned with a DTI sequence. The scans were spatially normalised and the fibre orientation in the patient compared with the fibre orientation i...

DTI measures in crossing-fibre areas: Increased diffusion anisotropy reveals early white matter alteration in MCI and mild Alzheimer's disease

Though mild cognitive impairment is an intermediate clinical state between healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), there are very few whole-brain voxel-wise diffusion MRI studies directly comparing changes in healthy control, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD subjects. Here we report whole-brain findings from a comprehensive study of diffusion tensor indices and probabilistic tractogra...
